In light of the tragic news that part of the 850-year old cathedral has been destroyed in a fire, The Art Newspaper revisits famous artworks inspired by the iconic building. 

One of the most recognisable structures in Paris, the cathedral of Notre Dame not only contains a great deal of artwork within it, but has also inspired artists who have come to Paris since its completion in the 1200s. Depictions of Notre Dame chart nearly a millennium of Parisian history, from its medieval origins, to its sweeping revolutions and focal position within the development of Modern art.​

Hockney painting breaks auction record for living artist

A celebrated painting by British artist David Hockney has been sold at Christie's in New York for just over $90m (£70m) - an auction record for a work by a living artist.

It sold following a 10-minute battle between two rival bidders via telephone, after the price passed $70m.

The sale eclipsed the previous record held by US artist Jeff Koons.

Bottle of Burgundy fetches record-smashing £424,000 at wine auction

A bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti wine fetched a record-smashing $558,000 (£424,000) at an auction held at Sotheby's in New York Saturday, which saw two bottles break the previous record.

The final price, including taxes and commissions, was 17 times the auction house's $32,000 upper estimate for the fine French wine.

The Tusk Rhino Trail sculptures have raised an extraordinary £624,000 at Christie's Auction

The Tusk Rhino Trail auction was the culmination of an extraordinary London-wide campaign launched to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino in Africa, and to celebrate the magnificence of this iconic animal through the medium of sculpture.

Twenty-one unique sculptures formed a trail across the capital, curated by Chris Westbrook and were sold at a benefit auction with every penny from the sale going to fund Tusk’s vital work across Africa, protecting rhino and other endangered species. 

 

It was a privilege for Marchant Group to attend and help support such a worthy cause. We were delighted to be able to take a rhino home! Designed and painted by the talented Gavin Turk.

Banksy posts video of £1m painting shredding stunt at Sotheby's

The framed Girl With Balloon, one of the artist's best known works, was auctioned by Sotheby's in London.

Moments after the piece was sold, the canvas of a girl reaching for a heart-shaped balloon shredded itself.

Quoting Picasso on his Instagram, Banksy wrote: "The urge to destroy is also a creative urge - Picasso."

The Connor Brothers Success In Auction

The Connor Brothers' 'Maybe It's Not About A Happy Ending' exceeded the estimate of £15,000 - £20,000 and achieved £30,000 in Phillips Auction this month.

 

The demand for the artists' work continues to grow and all other artwork by the pair including the popular 'Tell Me Beautiful Untrue Things' & 'Saints & Sinners' exceeded the estimates. 

The impressive size of these works with memorable images and strong captions appeal to art lovers, collectors and investors alike.
